Well, we did it. And it shouldn't be much of a surprise if you've taken a gander at the cranes along the skyline.

On Thursday, May 18, the U.S. Census Bureau released its list of largest cities by population and fastest-growing cities, listing Austin as the 10th most populous city in America. Even if we've dropped in quality, we got quantity, baby!

Clocking in at an even 1 million residents — 1,000,152 by sundown — Austin, long sitting just outside the top 10 in population, joins three other large Texas cities on the list. Houston (2.3 million) is at No. 4, San Antonio (1.5 million) at No. 7, and Dallas (1.3 million) is No. 9. Fort Worth falls just outside the top 10 at No. 13.

Also not particularly surprising is the number of Texas cities on the fastest-growing list, including the No. 1 city in America in terms of population growth between July 1, 2021 and July 1, 2022.

“Georgetown, Texas, remained the fastest-growing city by percent change in 2022, with the highest rate of growth among all U.S. cities and towns with at least 50,000 people,” said Crystal Delbé, a statistician in the Census Bureau’s Population Division.

The suburb north of Austin experienced a 14.4% population increase last year. Leander, due west of Georgetown, grew by 10.9%, clocking in at No. 4. We wrote about the trend in moving to Austin's northern suburbs last March.

Other Texas cities on the list are Kyle, the suburb just south of Austin, which also grew by 10.9% at No. 3, DFW suburb Little Elm (8%) at No. 5, East Texas' Conroe (6.3%) at No. 11, and New Braunfels (5.7%) at No. 13.

San Antonio had the third largest numeric increase among large cities, adding 18,889 residents in 2022.
