S.F. police make arrest in North Beach mass shooting
San Francisco police said they made an arrest following a mass shooting in the city’s North Beach neighborhood on Sunday that left one person dead and four others injured.
The shooting occurred near the intersection of Columbus Avenue and Broadway shortly before 11 p.m. Sunday.
Police said they arrived to find 23-year-old Isaiah Thomas of Suisun City suffering from gunshot wounds. Thomas was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Two shooting victims, both 24-year-old men from Sacramento County, were given emergency aid and transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The men were not identified in a statement summarizing the incident released by police.
Two additional shooting victims, 22-year-old Malachi Lefiti of Oakland and a 20-year-old woman from Contra Costa County whom police did not identify, were also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries prior to police arrival prior to the officers’ arrival, police said.
According to police, a preliminary investigation that included interviews with witnesses found that Thomas and Lefiti and “additional” unnamed suspects were allegedly attempting to rob the victims at gunpoint.
“During the incident, an altercation ensued, which resulted in Thomas, Lefiti, and three victims being shot,” police said in a statement.
Police officials previously said that they did not believe the shooting was done at random.
Lefiti was arrested and booked on charges of homicide, attempted homicide, attempted robbery conspiracy, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and a gang enhancement.
