The following contains major spoilers for Fast X, in theaters now.

Fast X director Louis Leterrier opened up about the film's controversial demise of a fan favorite, and his own role in crafting it.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Leterrier discussed the largely lambasted ultimate sacrifice made by John Cena's Jakob during the latest entry in the Fast and Furious franchise. As Leterrier explained, the death of Cena's character was an idea he came up with early on after meeting the actor, following his turn as an antagonist in the previous Fast and Furious film. "I'm like, 'That man can be a badass but cannot be a bad guy. There's no mean bone in his body," Leterrier recalled, before going on to describe Cena's reaction to the news. "I said to John, 'You will have to sacrifice yourself, to give the ultimate gift to your brother to save his son,' and it upset him."

Who's at the Wheel in Fast X

Cena joined a returning cast of fan-favorite characters for Fast X, as well as a suite of new ones including Jason Mamoa's villainous Dante Reyes, the son of drug lord Hernan Reyes, who died during the events of 2011's Fast Five. "I didn’t want it to turn into another macho, testosterone-showdown kind of thing," Mamoa said of the role. "I wanted to make him look really inviting and easy-going, to have a softer side... He’s been really, really hurt, so he’s a dangerous person. But his external vibes... I wanted you to be intrigued by Dante Reyes."

Fast X also marked Marvel Cinematic Universe icon Brie Larson's franchise debut as Tess, a former agent under the thumb of Kurt Russell's Mr. Nobody who eventually teams up with the crew of Dom Toretto as famously portrayed by franchise mainstay Vin Diesel. Diesel himself previously opened up about how Larson had the film's wardrobe department recreate his own daughter's "Good Vibes Only" jacket, which ended up being worn throughout the movie.

Diesel also seemingly confirmed that the franchise's finale will expand into a trilogy, rather than two-parter ending, with an eleventh film. "Going into making this movie, the studio asked if this could be a two-parter," he said. "And after the studio saw this one, they said, 'Could you make the finale, a trilogy?" Though this itself only partially alluded to the eventual production of a twelfth Fast and the Furious film, Diesel's co-star Michelle Rodriguez added that there are three acts to any story, to which Diesel responded with, "You're gonna get me in trouble here."
