Trea Turner admits he's 'sucked' as Phillies fans start to boo
Phillies fans are growing tired of Trea Turner’s rough start to the season.
Expectations soared for the Phillies this season after their surprising run to the World Series in 2022, which was followed by the blockbuster signing of Turner to an 11-year, $300 million contract.
But the two-time All-Star shortstop has stumbled out of the gate, slashing just .256/.303/.390 with four homers and 11 RBIs in 208 plate appearances across 46 games through Monday.
And Phillies fans have started to let him have it with boos.
“I’m honest with myself. I’ve sucked,” Turner told reporters after the Phillies’ 6-3 home loss to the Diamondbacks Monday night, in which Turner went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
“But every at bat, every play, every game is another day to try to do better. To try to be the player that I know I am. If you harp on yesterday or harp on the last at bat, it’s just going to snowball on you and you’re not going to be able to turn it around. I don’t lie to myself. I think I’m a positive guy. I think I can always do better and always can be better. That’s the kind of attitude I have. But at the same time I know when I don’t do something right.”

In his last 30 games, Turner has hit just .213 with a .254 on-base percentage and .370 slugging percentage.
Monday’s loss dropped the Phillies to 22-25 and seven games behind the NL East-leading Braves.
Making matters worse for Philadelphia is the performance of ex-Met Taijuan Walker, who has a 5.79 ERA and 1.44 WHIP after getting a four-year, $72 million contract from the Phillies over the winter.

And their two front-end starters, Aaron Nola and Zach Wheeler, both have ERAs over 4.10 through 10 starts.
Things haven’t been going swimmingly offensively either, as the Phillies are tied for 21st in MLB with 201 runs scored.
