Former NFL head coach joins Ohio State support staff
Former Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin is returning to college football for the first time since 2002.
Former Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin has joined Ohio State's staff as an offensive analyst, ESPN reported Tuesday.
Philbin, 61, has been in coaching since 1984 and at the NFL level since 2003.
After spending the first four seasons of Kirk Ferentz's Iowa tenure as the offensive line coach, Philbin joined the Green Bay Packers staff in 2003 as assistant offensive line coach and eventually coordinated the Packers' Aaron Rodgers-led offense to a Super Bowl title in the 2010 season.
That success earned him the Miami Dolphins head coaching job in 2012, where he remained through 2015. In four seasons at the helm, the Fins went 24-28 with two 8-8 seasons in 2013-14.
Brian Hartline, now Ohio State's first-year offensive coordinator, was a receiver for Miami from 2009-14.
After Miami, Philbin spent two seasons as the Indianapolis Colts offensive line coach, then returned to Green Bay as coordinator in 2018. He replaced Mike McCarthy as interim head coach for the past four games of the 2018 season, then joined him in Dallas in 2020, again as offensive line coach.
He was among five assistants let go following the 2022 season.
Philbin joins a Buckeye offense coordinated for the first time by Hartline, with Justin Frye returning as assistant head coach for offense and offensive line coach.
