The Dallas Stars will have to try and keep their postseason alive without their captain.

Jamie Benn has been suspended for two games by the NHL after he was ejected during Game 3 of the Western Conference finals between the Stars and Vegas Golden Knights. Benn lasted less than two minutes in Tuesday’s game, being called for a cross-check on Vegas captain Mark Stone in the first period.

Benn was given a game misconduct penalty for using his stick to check Stone near the neck and head area when he was on the ice.

If the term of Benn’s suspension is not fully served during the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs, the remaining game will be served at the beginning of the 2023-24 regular season.

Benn’s ejection was part of a disastrous early sequence for the Stars that saw goaltender Jake Oettinger chased away after allowing three goals. The Stars captain didn’t meet with reporters following the contest.

“Let’s put it this way: He made a mistake, feels really badly about it,” Stars coach Pete DeBoer said Tuesday. “I don’t think anyone in the building feels worse than he does about it. I’m not going to pile on him.

“We will live with the consequences, whatever they are. We lived with them tonight and we’ll live with them going forward if there’s any supplemental discipline.”

The Stars are in a precarious situation now that they face a three-game deficit. The last time an NHL team rallied from a 3-0 series deficit was in 2014.

Five times teams trailing 3-0 have forced Game 7. But a team on the verge of being swept in the conference finals has never gone on to win the Stanley Cup, let alone reach the championship round.
