Nintendo Blocks Game from Sale at Last Minute
An indie developer has had its new game blocked by Nintendo from the Switch eShop in multiple regions around the world due to suspicions concerning the game's content. The developer, Strange Scaffold, hopes to have the issue with Nintendo resolved so the game can be live and available for purchase around the world soon.
Sunshine Shuffle is a game that appears to be fairly harmless, if not abundantly child-friendly, on the surface. The game is marketed as a "narrative poker game where players will play cards with a group of adorable animal friends." The trailer makes it seem like an Animal Crossing game combined with a friendly round of Texas Hold 'Em, with a nice story to put a bow on top. Xalavier Nelson Jr., lead of Strange Scaffold, appears to have scared Nintendo a bit via social media.

Recent social media posts from Nelson cover the release troubles the game is now experiencing as the result of a campaign to educate the public that Sunshine Shuffle is not about child gambling. This campaign appears to have made some people over at Nintendo worried that the game actually is, in fact, promoting said child gambling. The issue is very relevant in the gaming industry right now, with games like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive being particularly affected by gambling controversies.
The game was initially blocked from the Nintendo Switch eShop in multiple regions around the world, including North America and Korea. The most recent update from Xalavier Nelson Jr. does make it appear as though the game is now available everywhere but North America. The situation is unfortunate, but Nelson appears to be taking it in good humor, retweeting multiple cases of fans making jokes about the idea that Sunshine Shuffle somehow encourages children to gamble. Nelson also recently tweeted, "I HAVE NO REGRETS, ONLY A VAGUE DISQUIET THAT I WILL ABSOLUTELY DO THIS TO MYSELF AGAIN AT SOME POINT."
Strange Scaffold is no stranger to odd headlines. One of the developer's most successful titles of the past is An Airport for Aliens Currently Run by Dogs. A game with such a hilariously weird and off-putting title that it garnered a lot of attention from media outlets as well as content creator turned indie publisher videogamedunkey. It definitely seems as though the indie development studio thrives off of attention generated by being one of the more idiosyncratic game makers in the industry.
Sunshine Shuffle is out everywhere on PC and everywhere but North America on Nintendo Switch.
