Fast X Box Office Hits The Brakes as The Little Mermaid Dominates The Weekend
As expected, The Little Mermaid has dominated the box office around the world, and even a poor showing in China couldn’t dampen the opening weekend takings for Disney’s latest live-action remake. In comparison, after its spectacular opening last weekend Fast X has hit the skids and taken a Marvel style plunge of over 67%, although the newest installment of the high-octane franchise has already passed $500 million at the worldwide box office and has settled into a top three spot among the year’s highest grossing movies.
The Little Mermaid has made a huge impact this weekend and is ready to tip the $200 million mark worldwide. Thanks to the extended weekend in many countries, the film is expected to push up to around $230 million or higher by the end of Monday, giving it one of the highest openings of any Disney live-action remake. Currently the film is sitting as the 8th highest grossing movie of the year, but will certainly pass Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves by tomorrow. How high up the chart it can climb in the coming weeks is something that is yet to be seen, but with many big movies coming out in the next few weeks, the film will have a big challenge on its hands to continue to make waves against the likes of The Flash and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

Fast X hit theaters in a screech of tyres and with some impressive opening weekend numbers. However, despite crossing the $500 million mark with ease, the film suffered a huge drop-off in its second weekend which doesn’t bode well for the film’s ability to massively improve on its current box office.
While Fast X is still a hit, it’s hefty reported budget of over $340 million and a substantial marketing campaign mean that its profitability is not going to be in the same realm as previous entries in the franchise. Although this is not going to stop future Fast and Furious movies coming down the line as planned, it could well see a tighter leash being put on spending on Fast 11 and whatever comes after that.
The main issue for Fast X is that the other big movies heading to cinemas over the next few weeks all fall into the same audience demographic, meaning that anyone who has not been to see the movie already could have some other movies coming out that they would rather pay their hard-earned cash to see instead. Currently Fast X is the third highest grossing movie of the year, having overtaken Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. There is a pretty substantial gap to bridge for Fast X to hit the number 2 spot, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 having taken over $720 million so far. Both movies have time to add to their totals, but a busy release schedule could see them both struggling for attention in the coming weeks.
