The Memorial is one of the best non-major events of the season. Given the prestige associated with tournament host Jack Nicklaus, it always boasts a strong field. This year is no exception, with 16 of the top 20 players in the Official World Golf Rankings participating. Muirfield Village features wide fairways off the tee and small greens surrounded by well-placed bunkers. Here I will target elite iron players with solid around-the-green play to navigate the difficulties of the course. Let’s get to the PGA DFS core plays.

Berryman’s PGA DFS Core Plays for the Memorial

Scottie Scheffler – $11,300

Sometimes it’s best not to overthink it. Right now Scheffler is the best player in the world and is on a ridiculous heater. He has 13 straight top-12 finishes that include seven top-5’s. He leads the field in strokes gained on approach and ranks inside the top 10 in strokes gained around the green in nearly every sample size. Scheffler skipped last year’s event but finished third here in 2021. With literally every box being checked, there’s really nothing that should be pulling anyone away from Scheffler this week outside of game theory in large-field GPP’s.

Patrick Cantlay – $10,500

Cantlay showcases a compelling blend of past success and recent form that made him an easy choice for core plays this week. His recent top-10 finish at the PGA Championship marked his seventh consecutive top-21, a streak bested only by Scheffler in this field. In addition to his excellent recent form, Cantlay has a remarkable track record at the Memorial that includes four top-5 finishes and two victories. Ranking third in strokes gained tee to green over the last 50 tracked rounds, his well-rounded skillset is tailormade for Muirfield Village. Cantlay should have another excellent week here.

Russell Henley – $7,900

Henley emerges as an enticing play mostly due to a resurgence in his iron play. Over his last three starts, he has gained an impressive 10.5 strokes on approach. This has coincided with some nice results of late, with four top-20 finishes in his last five starts. When right, Henley can throw his hat in the ring as one of the best iron players on tour, so this recent stretch is certainly an encouraging development. In addition to the hot iron play, Henley also ranks inside the top 40 in strokes gained around the green over the last 24 rounds. With multiple factors aligning in his favor, Henley represents an excellent value play at the upper end of the $7,000 range on DraftKings.

GPP Flier – Aaron Rai – $6,500

Rai is coming off his best week of the season after finishing 12th last week at Colonial. His ranking inside the top 40 in this field in both strokes gained on approach and around the green over the past 50 rounds provides some optimism that he possesses the skills necessary to compete again this weekend. Rai’s debut in the Memorial last year resulted in a respectable 26th-place finish, suggesting he can navigate the course effectively. With recent momentum, low projected ownership and a player profile that fits Muirfield Village, Rai is a compelling GPP flier option at the bottom of the board.
