Driver swims to shore after car plunges off bridge in Norwich

NORWICH, CT (WFSB) - A driver crashed off the side of a bridge in Norwich on Thursday morning.

According to dispatchers, the driver’s vehicle crashed near Viaduct and Water streets, and came to a rest in the Shetucket River below.

“The sole occupant of the vehicle was able to self-extricate and swim to shore,” Norwich police told Channel 3. “He was transported, conscious and alert to William W. Backus Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.”

Crews worked to remove the submerged vehicle, inspect the bridge and further investigate the crash.

No other injuries were reported.

Drivers were encouraged to find alternate routes through the area because there could be traffic delays.
