Final Fantasy 16 Digital Deluxe Edition Has Fans Unhappy
The Final Fantasy 16 Digital Deluxe Edition listing on the PlayStation 5 store is making some fans of the series very unhappy. Final Fantasy 16 is arriving later in June and more details about its release have been coming out.
Deluxe editions have held a tenuous but firm place in the gaming space throughout the years. Consistently, AAA titles get paired with deluxe releases, and more than once players have questioned whether the various offerings that come with these deluxe editions are actually worth it. Square Enix's latest major title is now falling under similar scrutiny as the Final Fantasy 16 digital deluxe version has arrived on the PlayStation 5 store.

A post made by the user katiecharm on the Final Fantasy subreddit airs many players' grievances with this meager digital deluxe edition. It costs $89.99, $20 more than the base edition of the game, and comes with a handful of small in-game items along with a digital soundtrack and artbook. Almost a third of the cost extra for some images, MP3s, and three items doesn't really seem super worth it to some people, even for the most dedicated fans of the series, and many were quick to point that out. Gamers are already split about this new trend of most new major titles like Tears of the Kingdom being $70 dollars, and these even more expensive deluxe editions are catching heat as a result.
Several comments under the Reddit thread note that the soundtrack for this deluxe edition is actually only a "mini-soundtrack," so players who actually might consider paying the extra $20 to listen to the music outside of the game, which seems likely considering the Final Fantasy series has fantastic soundtracks, may be disappointed to learn that the extra money won't even buy the full soundtrack. It's worth noting that there is also a physical deluxe edition which costs $99.99, but several players feel that it's more worth the money because it includes a SteelBook and cloth world map, along with the in-game items that come with the digital deluxe version.
Square Enix has yet to comment on the remarks from the fan base concerning this digital deluxe edition of Final Fantasy 16, and it's unknown if the company will add more worthwhile items or simply leave it as is for launch day. At least with this digital deluxe edition, fans know exactly what they're getting via the description, and even if it doesn't feel like enough for most, the easiest solution is simply to buy the base game if the deluxe doesn't seem worth it. With other deluxe and collector's editions, the same can't be said, like the massive controversy behind the Fallout 76 Power Armor edition and its not-so-canvas bag.
Final Fantasy 16 releases on June 22, 2023, for PS5.
