Well how about that! The Cubs didn’t just win another game, they won another ONE-RUN game against a good team. Their third this week! And unlike the finale against the Rays on Wednesday, Adbert Alzolay and Mark Leiter Jr. (he was NASTY) were able to come through with a painless save on Friday night. There’s still a long way to go this weekend, however, starting with a tough matchup against former Cubs Ace Yu Darvish tonight. Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup for Game 2 in San Diego.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Miles Mastrobuoni, 3B Nico Hoerner, 2B Ian Happ, LF Seiya Suzuki, RF Dansby Swanson, SS Mike Tauchman, CF Edwin Rios, DH Matt Mervis, 1B Tucker Barnhart, C

In case you couldn’t tell … Lefties have always been better against Yu Darvish than righties, but that’s especially true this season:

vs RHH: .213/.250/.438 (.290 wOBA)

vs LHH: .267/.348/.433 (.341 wOBA)

So David Ross has loaded the Cubs lineup with lefties, including leading off with Miles Mastrobuoni. All together, there are only three righties (Hoerner, Suzuki, and Swanson). And, hey … worth a try! Let’s see if the Cubs can’t guarantee the series split.

San Diego Padres Lineup:

Xander Bogaerts, SS Fernando Tatis Jr., RF Juan Soto, LF Manny Machado, 3B Gary Sanchez, C Jake Cronenworth, 1B Ha Seong Kim, 2B Brandon Dixon, DH Trent Grisham, CF

Pitching Matchup:

Chicago Cubs: Drew Smyly, LHP

Drew Smyly had been on an awfully nice nine-stretch run (2.13 ERA over 50.2 IP) before he ran into the Reds last weekend. They tagged him for 5 earned runs over 4.2 IP in what was his second worst start of the season. I am optimistic that he could bounce back — there’s no reason not to believe in him given how well he’s pitched all year — but the Padres are a tough lineup and their even better against left-handed pitching (105 wRC+).

Notable Matchup:

Bogaerts: 4-21, 2 2Bs, HR, 3BB, 7K

Machado: 6-18, 2 2Bs, 3BB, 3K

Soto: 1-9, HR, 1BB, 2K

San Diego Padres: Yu Darvish, RHP

But maybe the Cubs lineup will catch a break. Yu Darvish’s last start lasted just 2.2 innings in New York, where he allowed SEVEN earned runs on seven hits and just two strikeouts. And although he HAS been better than that this season, it has been a pretty rough stretch for him here lately. Consider that in the five starts before that blow up against the Yankees (as in, excluding that game), Darvish has earned a 4.20 ERA (4.78 FIP) with seven home runs allowed. I wouldn’t ever count on Darvish being not good, we’ve seen him up close and personal, we know what he can do. But he’s definitely not his best self at the moment.
