Colts Player Under Investigation For Betting on Own Team, 'Pervasive' Wagering
A player for the Indianapolis Colts is under investigation by the NFL for placing wagers on his own team, Sports Handle reported on Monday.
The investigation has found evidence that this player — who is on the Colts’ active roster — placed “hundreds of wagers,” a source told the publication.
No other member of the Colts was involved in these wagers, the publication reported. Sport Handle’s source regarded the player’s wagering activity as “pervasive.”
As of Monday, the identity of the player has not been released, and we are awaiting clarification on whether he placed bets on or against the Colts.
The news comes two months after five players were suspended for similar violations. The most high-profile suspension was for the Lions’ No. 2 wide receiver Jameson Williams, who is mandated to miss six games this upcoming season. Three of the other players were suspended indefinitely — all three were suspected to have wagered on NFL games.
Williams and former Lions wide receiver Stanley Berryhill were hit with six game suspensions — no evidence arose that suggested they wagered on the NFL.
Players, coaches and staff are not permitted to wager on the NFL. While they are able to wager on other sports, they can’t do so at team facilities, according to league rules.
Jaguars wide receiver Calvin Ridley missed the entire 2022 NFL season after reportedly wagering on parlays that incorporated NFL teams.
Indiana Gaming Commission Deputy Director Jenny Reske said the commission is investigating the violations, too.
“The IGC is not the lead agency because it involves violations of league policy,” Reske told Sports Handle. “We will however, continue to review information as it emerges to see if it requires any regulatory action.”
The Athletic reported last month that an additional member of the 2022 Lions roster is being investigated for a gambling transgression. The player seems to have placed wagers through an acquaintance, Sports Handle reported. It’s unclear whether this player placed bets on his own team.
