Cowboys Offer ‘Official’ Answer on DeAndre Hopkins Signing

The Cowboys are explaining why they do not plan a pursuit of free agent wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins.

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys think they have at least three reasons to justify why they do not plan a pursuit of free agent wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, as COO Stephen Jones in a Monday visit here at The Star is their plan.

‘We went down the road with (Brandin) Cooks,” Jones said of the trade for the Texans veteran. “We’re very comfortable with Cooks.”

Indeed, Jones went so far as to add, “We’re really pleased with our receiving group.”

Cooks counts as a new reason. CeeDee Lamb is a Pro Bowler. And Michael Gallup is confident that the player who averaged 30.3 receiving yards per game in 14 contests in the season before last is back.

In fact, as he moves further away from the torn left ACL that he suffered in January of 2022, Gallup believes that he's poised to reassert himself in his sixth NFL season.

"It's different. I feel springy again," Gallup told us recently.

And it seems to us that Gallup's successful rehab is among the reasons we feel comfortable in predicting, as we do here, that Dallas will not be issuing a blockbuster bid, complete with fat numbers in years and dollars, for free agent receiver DeAndre Hopkins.

This is not to say that Gallup is superior to Hopkins, but rather, to say that a healthy Gallup, teamed with Dallas' other two top pass-catchers, might be enough to cause Cowboys management to believe the team is well-stocked as is.

Gallup -- less than a year removed from tearing his ACL -- never looked like himself last year. He had 39 catches for 424 yards, as the Cowboys became entirely too reliant on Lamb.

But moving forward? Jones even mentioned second-year guy Jalen Tolbert is the conversation that essentially means the answer on Hopkins is “no.”

And if the Cowboys are right here? They believe led by Dak Prescott - and without another pricy blockbuster move - they will have one of the more potent offenses in the NFL.
