Hundreds of customers are still without power Thursday afternoon after an “underground equipment damage” disrupted service in portions of San Francisco, according to Pacific Gas & Electric.

Approximately 495 customers were still out of power as of 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning, PG&E spokesperson Mayra Tostado said.

According to The Chronicle’s PG&E outage tracker, the outages were clustered in the city’s northeast corner, including several downtown blocks of Jackson, Washington and Battery streets.

The area includes many high-rise buildings and office towers, but PG&E could not confirm the types of buildings that lost power.

The underground damage is still under investigation and may delay power restoration into the weekend, Tostado said.

“Due to extensive damage to underground equipment in the area, PG&E expects to restore power by 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 29, to the remaining customers who are served directly by the damaged equipment,” she said. “We know how disruptive it is to be without power and have brought in additional crews and resources to bolster restoration efforts.”

The outage began around 9:15 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Clay and Montgomery streets, affecting just under 9,500 customers customers in several parts of the city, including the Financial District, Nob Hill, Union Square and North Beach, according to PG&E.

The San Francisco Fire Department said on Twitter that they responded to underground electrical vault fire at 640 Clay Street around the same time and area where the power outages were reported. There were no injuries.

The Fire Department encouraged people to contact PG&E about the outage and restoration times.
