Kilauea volcano erupts into spectacular lava fountains in Hawaii

Located on the Big Island of Hawaii, the Kilauea volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. The volcano erupted in the predawn hours of Wednesday, exploding into lava fountains.
The volcano, known for its lava lake at Halemaumau, is erupting after a three-month pause, during which there was no active lava on its surface. The volcano was showing signs of unrest the past few weeks, however. The U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory was tracking an increasing number of earthquakes at Kilauea’s summit prior to the eruption.
