The Las Vegas Raiders selected Texas Tech edge rusher Tyree Wilson with the No. 7 pick in the draft. The Raiders finished 27th in sacks last season despite starting Pro Bowl edge rusher Maxx Crosby. At 6-foot-6, 271 pounds, Wilson is a long defender with the quickness of a much smaller player. He got around lineman easily in college for seven sacks among his 61 tackles in 10 starts before a foot injury ended his season.
In their first season together, Coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler had mountainous expectations awaiting them after trading for the star receiver Davante Adams. Paired with his former college quarterback Derek Carr in Las Vegas, the duo formed the core of what had the potential to be a top tier N.F.L. offense.
But the Raiders struggled, finishing 6-11 and missing the playoffs. They released Carr and star tight end Darren Waller, and will have a new look next season. The move for a defensive player in the first round should help the team compete in the A.F.C. West, which features some of the most dynamic offenses in the N.F.L.
