Tom Holland has revealed he is taking a year off from acting, which he says is partly down to the brutal filming of his new Apple TV+ series The Crowded Room. However, he may also need to take time out to get away from the brutal reviews that have been coming in from critics for the series.

Speaking recently to Extra, Holland recounted the “tough time” he had on the production of the new series. He said:

“We were exploring certain emotions that I have definitely never experienced before. And then on top of that, being a producer, dealing with the day-to-day problems that come with any film set, just added that extra level of pressure. I’m no stranger to hard work. I’ve lived by the idea that hard work is good work. Then again, the show did break me. There did come a time where I needed a break and disappeared and went to Mexico for a week and had time on a beach and laid low. I’m now taking a year off, and that is a result of how difficult this show was. I am excited to see how it turns out. I feel like our hard work wasn’t in vain.”

While there is currently a lot of speculation over Holland’s return as Spider-Man in his fourth MCU outing, his new series is not feeling the kind of love that 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home received.

Why is The Crowded Room Receiving Bad Reviews?

Marvel Studios

The Crowded Room is a thriller about a man called Danny Sullivan (Holland), who reveals the story of his life during a series of police interviews following his arrest at the scene of a shooting. Detective Rya Goodwin (Amanda Seyfried) finds herself intrigued to hear the events that have made Danny the man he is, and leads to revelations she is not prepared for.

While this all seems like the set-up for a deep and meaningful series, critics on Rotten Tomatoes have not seen much of merit in the show, giving it just a 27% approval rating. The consensus suggests that while there is plenty of talent in the cast, and a promising premise, the story takes too long to meander to its conclusion and leads to an “exhausting and often frustrating experience.” However there is some good news for the limited series, as audiences really don’t agree with the critics.

Currently, The Crowded Room is holding a very strong 93% audience score, and although there are some who have noted that the pacing is slow and the story does occasionally meander on a little too long, there are very few who have bad things to say. From praising Holland’s performance as one of his best, to the intensity of the plot into the second half of the show, it seems that The Crowded Room is another streaming series that is showing a huge divide in what audiences and critics want from their TV shows.
