Box Office Results: Transformers: Rise of the Beasts Edges Out Spider-Man
It was a tough battle, but eventually Optimus Prime and his robot pals managed to edge out Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse at the domestic box office. Per Deadline, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts earned $60.5 million in its debut frame, enough to beat Spidey’s $50.5M (-54%) sophomore weekend.
Both pics are racking up big numbers overseas. Transformers jumped to a $170.5M total, $40M of which comes from China. Spider-Man’s global take rose to $225.5M, and the anticipated sequel has already surpassed the $190.2M global gross of the original.
Transformers also hauled in $6.4M from 399 Imax screens.
While Rise of the Beasts doesn’t get to brag about records, and pales in comparison to Michael Bay’s earlier pics, its opening at least marks a huge jump from Bumblebee’s $21.6M haul and proves there’s still love for the action franchise. Can the series return to its former box office glory, especially considering the film’s nifty twist that could potentially take Optimus and friends into a completely different realm?
Audiences awarded Transformers an A-, which hopefully means many will return in the weeks ahead and push the robot sequel to box office glory. Standing in its way, however, are The Flash and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, not to mention Mission Impossible, Barbie, and Oppenheimer. It’s a busy summer, folks!
