18-year-old Pitman High School student missing after swimming in lake with friend
Officials say an 18-year-old student from Pitman High School and a friend tried to swim across the lake, however, the teen went under the water and did not reappear.
A Camden County dive unit and Deptford marine units were dispatched to search the water.
PITMAN, New Jersey (WPVI) -- Dive teams are searching for a teen who went missing while swimming in a Gloucester County, New Jersey lake.
A Camden County dive unit and Deptford marine units responded to the scene around 9 p.m. Sunday to search Alcyon Lake on Cedar and West Holly avenues.
Officials say an 18-year-old student from Pitman High School and a friend tried to swim across the lake, however, the teen went under the water and did not reappear.
"There was another male swimming with him that made an effort to rescue his friend, but was unable to. Another bystander tried as well and they contacted 911," Ryan Pierson, Borough of Pitman Deputy Emergency Manager Coordinator, said.
Multiple agencies spent the overnight hours combing the lake.
There is no word of the teen's identity.
