Bride brings grandma to tears by wearing her 1970s courthouse dress to wedding rehearsal: 'So sweet'
A bride-to-be shocked her family when she wore her grandmother’s 1972 courthouse dress to her wedding rehearsal, and now, the touching “something old, something new” footage is going viral.
TikToker Maggy Meitzler (@maggymeitzler) gained over 1.6 million views, 246,000 likes, 4,300 saves and 3,500 comments when she uploaded the emotional video to her account.
Maggy isn’t the first bride to give a special family heirloom a place of honor on her big day. Recently, we’ve seen a trend of moms’ and grandmas’ old wedding dresses being freed from storage to become modern rehearsal dresses — a trend that’s only growing in popularity with each viral TikTok.
Maggy’s video — captioned, “The best surprise I’ve ever pulled off” — begins with a shot of her family and friends waiting for the rehearsal to begin.
“Surprising my grandparents by wearing my grandma’s 51 year old courthouse wedding dress for my wedding rehearsal,” Maggy’s video reads.
As Maggy begins to walk down the aisle, arm in arm with her dad, the congregation rises and turns. As soon as she sees the dress, Maggy’s grandmother brings her face to her hands and turns away, clearly overwhelmed with emotion.
Much to TikTok’s delight, Maggy’s grandma then turns to her husband to ensure he recognizes the dress. “Love Grandma turning to Grandpa to remind him this was her dress from their day,” wrote user @colorfulshoes.
Later in the video, Maggy holds a photo of her grandparents on their wedding day. In the photo, her grandma can be seen wearing the very same red dress — which has clearly held up very well over the years.
According to Minted, the average courthouse or city hall wedding costs between $20 to $50 (the license will cost an additional $40 to $100). Considering that the current average U.S. wedding costs $30,000, it’s no wonder why so many couples opt for a simple courthouse ceremony.
While Maggy’s grandmother might have said “I do” in 1972 at city hall, Maggy and her fiancé Matthew opted for a traditional wedding ceremony — the footage of which she later shared to TikTok.
Judging by the 3,500 emotional comments, it seems Maggy’s sweet surprise touched more hearts than those of just her grandparents.
“Thanks for making me cry at 738am!! So sweet!!” wrote @savannahrose552.
“grandmas reaction was everything,” commented @robymari1.
“Omgggg her reaction!!!🥹🥹 grandparents are so special 🤍🤍” wrote @mollyjcurley.
“Ummmm can we talk about how iconic this dress is?!” commented @emelize28.
Hopefully this upcycled dress trend will unearth even more vintage gems from the older generations’ closets!
