Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 11, Pirates 3 - June 13, 2023
The Cubs got SO MANY “that’s baseball” breaks tonight – including SIX infield hits! their most in a decade! – and I’m here to tell you that it is cosmically justified. We all deserved it. I mean, the Cubs may not have NEEDED that many when all was said and done, given that it became a blowout, but whatever. You take all the good you can get.
It was a quality start for Jameson Taillon, but it could’ve been even quality-er if not for Jack Suwinski taking him deep twice. That guy really loves hitting homers against the Cubs (blah blah blah, he’s from the Chicagoland area blah blah blah).
Still, nice to see a competitive outing overall from Taillon against his old mates. There have been precious few this year, and you’ll take any one you can get from him right now, even if it’s the minimum version (6.0 IP, 3 ER).
Hits aplenty up and down the lineup for the Cubs, though I’ll credit Matt Mervis with the game-winning hit in the 6th through the rain:
The Cubs tacked on from there (including the run-scoring play that saw Ian Happ leave the game – hopefully he’ll be all right), turning it into a laugher in the rain.
It was Pride Night at Wrigley Field, and it was nice to see the home team bring in the win.
