Ian Happ Leaves the Game After Scoring a Run (UPDATE)
Never just a clean, happy time. Hopefully this is nothing, and it was mostly because the Cubs had built a big lead.
In the bottom of the 7th, Yan Gomes came through with a two-run single to pad the Cubs’ lead. Scoring that second run was Ian Happ, who slid at home plate, and then popped up and rubbed his right calf:
After the inning, Christopher Morel came out to man left field, taking over for Happ.
All you can hope there is that the calf was bothering him a bit, and he was removed as a precaution. I don’t blame anyone for not feeling remotely comforted by anything the Cubs say about this one until he’s actually back on the field.
UPDATE: Confirming it was the calf, and also confirming that you are not going to get any comfort from this:
Cubs manager David Ross said Ian Happ came out of the game after his “calf grabbed on him.” Said the calf is “a little tight,” and they’ll see how he’s feeling tomorrow. — Ryan Herrera (@ryan_a_herrera) June 14, 2023
And frankly, I don’t give a rip what anyone says tomorrow, either. Until Happ is literally back on the field and playing, there’s no longer any reason to take much at face value.
