A woman has died after a boating accident at a lake in Fresno County on Friday night.

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- 67-year-old Neva Marlene Klomp from Clovis is dead after a boating incident at Pine Flat Lake.

The Fresno County Sheriff's Office, along with several other first responders, received a call around 8 pm Friday.

Sgt. Jeff Stricker says the boat hit a log, ultimately changing the direction of the boat.

"Everybody in the boat got thrown to the ground," he said. "The one female that passed away got thrown into the side of the boat, where she suffered some head trauma."

Boating on the lake is a safe alternative for people this summer.

But Stricker says it has become riskier this year with the record snowpack.

"As the water levels rise in the lakes, all the debris from this past winter that got washed down, trees knocked over, the water level is getting to the point where all that debris is," he said.

Stricker says fallen debris can be found floating in all Central Valley lakes.

He says it's required to have a lookout while boating on any lake.

Stricker says these types of incidents are uncommon. And encourages people to also be aware of their surroundings.
