WVU Basketball Players Anxiously Wait for New Direction

West Virginia’s basketball players are anxiously waiting for an update on the direction the program is heading towards, a source told WV Sports Now.

WVU’s players have 30 days to show their intentions of entering the transfer portal with Bob Huggins resigning. According to the NCAA, “Student-athletes receive an extra 30-day time period to enter the transfer portal if there is a head coaching change or if aid is canceled.” This was put in when the NCAA revised the transfer portal windows last year.

The question of who can leave is important but a question that needs an answer first is which direction will WVU go towards.

WVU can either promote a current assistant as an interim head coach or hire an entirely new coaching staff this late into the offseason. The problem is the current players. The source also tells WVSN that the players want an internal hire as opposed to an external one. This makes the most sense as Josh Eilert, Ron Everhart and DerMarr Johnson have spent more time with the returning and even new players than an entirely new staff.

Hopefully, for the players, they get that answer sooner than later so they can invest in themselves.

If the players do decide to leave West Virginia, some will need waivers while others will not. Reports say that multi-time non-graduate transfers such as RaeQuan Battle would need a waiver while one-time transfers Kerr Kriisa and Jesse Edwards would not. This is another situation where the NCAA’s lack of transparency makes it confusing for everyone involved.

Here’s a check on each individual’s eligibility status:

One Year Remaining: RaeQuan Battle, Jesse Edwards, Tre Mitchell, Jose Perez, Omar Silverio, Joe Toussaint

Two Years: Kobe Johnson, Kerr Kriisa, James Okonkwo, Patrick Suemnick, Mohamed Wague, Seth Wilson

Three Years: Josiah Harris

WVSN will keep you updated on WVU’s coaching search.
