A leaker who has accurately leaked video game news has suggested that Nintendo fans have a massive Nintendo Direct to look forward to this week that will see the reveal of a new 2D Super Mario game and a remake of a classic SNES title. Nintendo traditionally hosts a big event in the summer to coincide with E3, but the Big N has been silent as its competitors have taken the stage.

Nintendo fans have been eagerly anticipating a new Nintendo Direct event, especially now that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has been out for over a month and the rest of 2023 is looking pretty bare when it comes to first-party Switch exclusive games. Leakers have suggested that a Nintendo Direct event could be happening as early as this week, and while that remains to be seen, it could be host to some huge announcements.

Leaker Pyoro on Twitter, who accurately leaked the reveal of Everybody 1-2 Switch and Sonic Superstars, has made bold claims about a possible Nintendo Direct event happening this week. According to Pyoro, Nintendo will be using its next Nintendo Direct event to announce the long-rumored new 2D Super Mario Bros. game as well as a remake of a classic SNES title. The latter is anyone's guess, but it's worth pointing out that another leaker claimed that Square Enix is remaking Chrono Trigger for the Nintendo Switch, though that wasn't hinted at by Pyoro.

All leaks should be taken with a massive grain of salt, of course, though this is far from the first time that we've heard about a new 2D Super Mario game. According to the leaks, Nintendo has already wrapped development on a new 2D Super Mario game, which will reportedly see the long-awaited return of Wrecking Crew character Spike. Spike was featured in the massively successful Super Mario Bros. Movie, which added credibility to the rumors that Nintendo was potentially bringing him back for a new video game appearance.

Pyoro is not the only leaker to claim that a Nintendo Direct is happening this week, but Nintendo itself has not made any announcements at the time of this writing. Nintendo sometimes shadow drops Nintendo Direct presentations, though, so fans may not even get advanced notice when one happens. If a Nintendo Direct does happen this week as rumored, it will be interesting to see if the rumors of the new 2D Super Mario game are true, because if they are, they will lend credibility to some of the other claims made by these leakers as of late.
