Pope Francis was released from Gemelli Hospital Friday morning, June 16, where he was admitted more than a week ago to undergo a laparotomy and plastic surgery of the abdominal wall with a prosthesis.

The medical staff in charge of his follow-up confirmed this news, which followed the daily note published yesterday by the Vatican Press Office, in which it was indicated that the discharge from the hospital was planned due to an uncomplicated clinical recovery.

The medical statement for Thursday, June 15 states that “Pope Francis rested well during the night” and that “his blood tests are normal.”

The statement also states that last night the pope shared a community dinner with the staff who have been assisting him since the day of his admission.

Thursday morning, as a sign of gratitude, he received the entire surgical team, made up of doctors, nurses, socio-health personnel and auxiliaries, who have surrounded him since the surgery performed on June 6.

With his early discharge from the hospital, Pope Francis will continue his convalescence in the Vatican, surrounded by the necessary care and following medical indications.

The Pope's entourage is cautious about the resumption of his activities. The question of his traveling to Portugal for World Youth Day, which would normally take place from Tuesday August 1 to Sunday August 6, is somewhat up in the air, which would mean the outright cancellation of the event.

The local WYD organizing committee told the Portuguese daily Publico on June 8: “WYD is a meeting between the Pope and young people from all over the world that always takes place in his presence, regardless of his physical limitations.”

This is why, the organizers continued, “there is no other possible scenario if Francis cannot be present for health reasons, because no one is considering the possibility of the pope being represented by someone else.” So there will be no WYD without Francis.
