With no official media released yet for Activision’s rumored Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, leakers may have stepped in to fill the void, releasing a series of images that purport to show the new game and featuring the return of some classic maps. While gamers wait for the official reveal of the highly anticipated game, Activision is ensuring that there is still a steady stream of content coming to the franchise’s latest entry, with recent rumors suggesting a crossover between Amazon’s The Boys and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 may be in the works.

Details remain scarce about what Activision has in store for the rumored third entry in its line of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboots, though it’s safe to assume it will more or less follow the formula established by its two predecessors. Kicking off with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in 2019, the rebooted series sees the return of fan-favorite characters like SAS Captain John Price in a new story continuity loosely inspired by the original games. Although these reimagined versions of the classic series feature many significant changes from the source material, there are still occasional nods to their roots, such as the recent debut of a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 emblem containing a humorous reference to the game’s 2009 namesake.

According to news first reported by Insider Gaming, leakers have released what they claim are the first screenshots of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Posted to Twitter by the account CoD_Perseus, the screenshots, which can be viewed here, show modern versions of the Terminal and Scrapyard maps from the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Typically a reliable source when it comes to rumors regarding Activision’s popular shooter franchise, earlier this year, Insider Gaming posted the first Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 leaks that claimed to confirm the game’s title and that Sledgehammer Games would head development.

Users on Twitter had mixed reactions to the supposedly leaked Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 screenshots. While some respondents were glad to see classic locales seemingly making a return to the franchise, others were sad to see that the images featured reimagined versions of old locations rather than entirely new maps for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s third entry. Expressing their disappointment with the apparent return of the classic maps, one user stated that “It looks great I’ll give them that but it won’t play like 2009” before suggesting that Activision consider adjusting movement speed for the new title to bring it more in-line with previous Call of Duty games.

Activision is unlikely to provide confirmation as to the validity, or lack thereof, of these leaked images, but they’re already causing excitement among some franchise fans. For now, gamers will have to wait for the official reveal of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 to see if they’ll be revisiting Terminal or Scrapyard any time soon.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is rumored to be in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
