Cowboys drafting Texas LB DeMarvion Overshown was personal - to Jerry Jones’ grandkids
FRISCO — At some point the Jones family is going to have a changing of the guard. As it stands, Jerry Jones is the team owner and general manager and Stephen Jones is the executive vice president.
The grandkids will take over the family business.
Some day.
Friday night, the grandkids took over the NFL draft.

The Cowboys selected Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown in the third round. It was a selection that was personal to the Cowboys’ grandkids.
After the Cowboys made the selection, Jerry Jones’ grandson, Shy Jr., handed his cell phone to his brother Paxton to talk about Overshown.
Paxton and Overshown are teammates at Texas. Paxton, a wide receiver, told Overshown the Cowboys were going to draft him. Overshown, a versatile linebacker who was a first-team All-Big 12 selection last season, couldn’t believe it.
“It means the world,” Overshown said. “Growing up around nothing but Cowboys fans, they were basically my hometown team. Getting that call where it says The Star and hearing Jerry Jones’ voice, that meant the world to me and it’s a feeling that I’ll never forget and I’ll cherish forever. The tears instantly came down my face once I saw that number. I couldn’t have asked for a better situation. I’m blessed.”
Paxton texted to Overshown: “Congratulations, I told you.”
So these Jones grandkids know a little something about which players the older adults in the room want.
“We talked about it at length before he had his visit here,” Jerry Jones said. “He had mentioned him from time-to-time in the past. Whether it was practicing or playing, he said he’s all over the place, he’s everywhere.”
And there was excitement in the Cowboys’ war room when it was known Overshown was the pick.
Dan Quinn, the defensive coordinator, was pumped as he slapped hands with members of the front office. There was also special teams coach John Fassel joining the party for Overshown because he’s gaining a special teams product.
“Excellent pick for us,” coach Mike McCarthy said. “A great fit, holding our breath (if he was going to be available), physical play style.”
When it comes to the defense, Overshown is an off-the-ball linebacker the Cowboys believe has versatility. His ability to play safety to cover tight ends and running backs in the passing game is another benefit. McCarthy mentioned safety Donovan Wilson traits in Overshown and there’s also Jayron Kearse, the safety/linebacker spot that the new rookie can possibly fill.
Overshown spent the first two seasons at Texas playing safety and then moved to linebacker. He picked up an extra year due to the coronavirus allowing players to gain an extra year of eligibilty.
So Overshown played three seasons at linebacker and Will McClay, the vice president of player personnel, said it was a benefit for him to gain extra reps.
In 2022, Overshown finished with 96 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, four sacks and five pass breakups.
The other positive for Overshown is special teams. He played all four special teams units in college and there’s an expectation he’ll do it again.
And just based on what happened the first two days of the draft, Overshown’s college, Texas, is moving forward.
Texas running back Bijan Robinson went No. 8 overall in a draft that saw two players at his position go in the first round. So maybe the running back position is on the comeback.
After Robinson, Overshown went in the third round. It was the first time Texas also had a player go in the first round since 2015.
Can you remember who was picked? Well, it was Malcolm Brown (first round) and Jordan Hicks (third round).
Overshown was excited about the come up of Texas.
“It is good to see Texas Longhorns back in the draft,” Overshown said. “We still got some more that’s going to be off the board here soon.”
If you don’t believe that, just ask the Jones grandkids.
