ARLINGTON — For the second time in his last three starts, Jacob deGrom had an early exit.

The Rangers’ ace left Friday’s 5-2 win vs. the New York Yankees with forearm tightness after 3.2 innings pitched and 50 pitches. He retired the first 10 batters he faced, then issued a one-out walk to Anthony Rizzo in the fourth. After a flyout, he gave up a two-out single to Willie Calhoun.

DeGrom placed his hand on his hip and walked back to the pitchers mound after Calhoun’s single. The Rangers’ staff, including pitching coach Mike Maddux, came to check on him before manager Bruce Bochy pulled him from the game moments later. DeGrom’s second-to-last pitch was an outside 96.6 mile per hour fastball — his slowest of the night, and 2.2 mph slower than his average. His final pitch, an 89.4 mph slider, was also his slowest slider of the night and 2.7 mph slower than his average.

Relief pitcher Dane Dunning replaced deGrom on the mound with the Rangers leading the Yankees 5-0.

DeGrom, who struggled with injuries in his last two seasons with the New York Mets in 2021 and 2022, left a start against the Kansas City Royals on April 17 after four no-hit innings with wrist soreness, but made his next scheduled start six days later and pitched six innings in a win over the Oakland Athletics.

The Rangers slow-played deGrom in spring training after he reported side tightness at the start of camp, but he started for Texas on opening day and has so far made each of his scheduled starts.

In 29.2 innings pitched this season, deGrom has a 2.73 ERA and 45 strikeouts. The Rangers were undefeated in his first five starts.
