UConn's Adama Sanogo not selected in NBA Draft, likely to sign with team as free agent
UConn’s Adama Sanogo, the Most Outstanding Player of the 2023 Final Four, was not one of 58 players chosen in the NBA Draft on Thursday night.
Sanogo, a 6-9 big man out of Mali, led the national champion Huskies in both scoring (17.2 points per game) and rebounding (7.7 per) last season. He was even more impressive during UConn’s NCAA Tournament run, averaging 19.7 points and 9.8 rebounds in six games and scoring 17 against San Diego State in the national title game.
Despite his dominance in college, Sanogo is considered undersized as an NBA big and scouts believe he lacks some of the skills coveted in the modern NBA game. He measured in at 6-7 without shoes at the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago.
Despite the fact that he wasn’t selected on Thursday, Sanogo can still sign with a team as an undrafted free agent. Signings typically take place in the hours and days after the draft.
UConn fans will likely have a chance to see Sanogo in an NBA uniform in just over a week as the NBA’s summer league schedule begins July 3.
Sanogo’s Huskies teammates, Jordan Hawkins and Andre Jackson were chosen Thursday, with Hawkins going No. 14 to New Orleans and Jackson landing at No. 36 to the Milwaukee Bucks following a reported trade.
