Man shot, killed near Powell Street BART Station in SF
A man was fatally shot near Powell and Market streets Thursday night, according to San Francisco police.
Officers responded to the area around 8:39 p.m. after receiving reports of the shooting. When they arrived, they located the man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, with his attacker nowhere to be found. The victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and died there shortly after.
Police swarmed the Powell Street BART Station after the incident, and witnesses told The Chronicle that the victim was apparently shot in front of the mall, ran down the stairs into the plaza near the station and collapsed. None of the witnesses saw the shooting occur, though they heard the gunshot.
The victim's identity was not immediately released.
Investigators believe this is an isolated incident and that there was no threat to the public. The Powell entrance to the BART station was closed as police conducted their probe.
Authorities said no suspect was arrested and the shooting remains an active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the SFPD tip line at 415-575-4444.
