Hikers have found human remains in the area where actor Julian Sands went missing, the San Bernardino Sheriff’s office announced on Saturday. Sands went missing in January while hiking near California’s Mount Baldy. Identification of the remains has not yet been officially confirmed. “On Saturday, June 24, 2023, at about 10:00 a.m., civilian hikers contacted the Fontana Sheriff’s Station after they discovered human remains in the Mt. Baldy wilderness,” the Sheriff’s office statement reads. “Fontana Station deputies, along with the Sheriff’s Department’s Emergency Operations Division, responded to the scene. The decedent was transported to the Coroner’s Office, pending positive identification.” Per the statement, “identification should be completed next week at which time we will update this press release.”

The announcement comes a day after Sands’ family released a statement regarding the actor’s disappearance. “We are deeply grateful to the search teams and coordinators who have worked tirelessly to find Julian,” his family said in their first statement since search efforts began. “We continue to hold Julian in our hearts, with bright memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and as an original and collaborative performer.” Known for his roles in Room with a View, The Killing Fields, Warlock and Arachnophobia, Sands was officially reported missing on January 13. Per Deadline, San Bernardino sheriffs said they have since conducted eight searches and eight other operations to find the 65-year-old actor. Efforts have been delayed for several months due to weather conditions, and recently resumed with a search last Saturday that reportedly involved helicopters, drone crews, and more than 80 volunteers, deputies, and staff.
