Bon Appetit names top bagels outside of NYC; Bay Area gets 3 on list

Bon Appetit magazine, which is headquartered in New York City, released a new list Tuesday: “The Very Best Bagels in the US (Yes, Outside New York).” Surprisingly, or maybe not, given the Bay Area’s pandemic-born bagel boom, three local bagel shops made the list. And here at SFGATE we definitely try to champion our Bay Area bagels — New York supremacy be damned.
First up was Midnite Bagel in San Francisco — the brainchild of a former Tartine bread baker. The bagels at Midnite are like a good piece of sourdough bread in a bagel format. When owner Nick Beitcher opened his brick-and-mortar store, SFGATE described his bagels as “dense but with a strong sour flavor, like our city is known for. It was almost like a workout to chew the boiled beauties. … But like any good workout, the post-exercise high is worth the effort.” Unfortunately, Beitcher recently closed his Inner Sunset bagel shop and now sells them exclusively at certain farmers markets and a commissary in the heart of the Dogpatch, according to the Infatuation.
