Enhanced Box Score: Phillies 8, Cubs 5 - June 28, 2023
You barely had a chance to root for a better outcome tonight before the Phillies were once again up big, thanks to a couple homers in the second inning off of Drew Smyly. The latter two runs he gave up were dribbly, bloopy nonsense, but the two-run and three-run homers in the 2nd? Yeah, those are not good.
On the bright side, that was a really nice outing for Hayden Wesneski. Phillies were a bit overloaded on righties, which makes for a nice match-up for him, but still. He executed well. Always nice to see, because his future with the Cubs still matters a great deal.
Also fun to see Jared Young hit his first big league homer. Cubs had some chances to make things interesting, even after the Phillies had scored eight, but couldn’t get the hit when it mattered. You recognize it.
