Former hotel manager reveals the first 3 things she always does when staying in a hotel: 'So gross'
A woman who used to work as a hotel manager has taken to TikTok to reveal what she always does as a hotel guest — no matter if it’s a five-star hotel or one-star — and TikTokers are super grossed out.
Travel vlogger and hospitality evaluator Melly (@melly_creations) gained over 2.2 million views, 84,000 likes, 7,900 saves and 500 comments after she uploaded her trade secrets.
Now, much like the restaurant worker who sent shock waves through TikTok when he revealed the true reason those yummy-looking fajita dishes sizzle, Melly’s inside scoop on hotels is going viral.
While Melly is no longer a hotel manager, she learned a lot during her time in the hospitality industry.
And though she herself always ensured rooms were kept clean, bug-free and well-laundered during her time as a manager (according to a response she left in response to one viewer’s comment), she knows that not every hotel manager does the same — which is why she always follows these rules when spending the night in a hotel:
Check the air vents in the air conditioner Thoroughly check the bed (and bed cover) for bedbugs Remove the top cover from the bed, which is rarely (if ever) cleaned
In a follow-up video, which gained Melly another 3.1 million views, she went on to reveal why she never uses hotel coffee machines or refillable shampoo/conditioner bottles (unless they are kept locked or secured).
However, according to Study Finds, your hotel room isn’t the only place where germs dwell.
“Before you even enter your room, think of the hotel elevator buttons as germ hotspots,” the website states. “They are being pressed all the time by many different people, which can transfer microorganisms onto the button surface, as well back onto the presser’s fingers.”
And while we may think bathrooms and beds are the most germ-infested areas in hotel rooms, it’s actually the objects found around your room that might pose the biggest health risk.
“Less thought about is what lives on the hotel room desk, bedside table, telephone, kettle, coffee machine, light switch or TV remote — as these surfaces aren’t always sanitized between occupancies.”
‘I now get the ick every time I stay in a hotel’
TikTokers were shocked by Melly’s videos and thankful for her insider knowledge.
“After watching all these videos from TikTok, I now get the ick every time I stay in a hotel😅😅” commented @morganh886.
“Don’t understand how it’s acceptable to not have to wash all pieces of bedding! There needs to be some sort of regulation so that can change. So gross,” wrote @hemi110821019.
“i always bring Lysol and disinfectant wipes my own pillow cases and my own blanket!! I never go under the sheets @ hotels 😳” shared @marrr1987.
According to Everyday Health, in addition to sanitizing the surfaces in your hotel room, you should always wash your hands thoroughly and frequently while traveling.
