Titanic sub live updates: “catastrophic implosion” on Titan, presumed human remains | Latest news
Hello and welcome to AS USA's live coverage of the aftermath of the Titan submersible tragedy.
The first pieces of debris have been brought to shore from the Titan submersible which suffered a “catastrophic implosion” deep underwater. The accident occurred on Sunday 18 June when the vessel was enroute to visit the remains of the Titanic, which is located some 12,500 feet (3,800m) below the surface of the sea.
Debris from the ill-fated vessel was discovered just 1,600 feet from its destination. Multiple authorities have now opened investigations into the accident. The US Coast Guard says the wreckage has been mapped out and the initial phase will be to recover the pieces of the Titan.
Titan had five passengers aboard, including the CEO of OceanGate Stockton Rush, all of whom perished in the tragedy. In a surprise announcement, the US Coast Guard announced that amongst the debris, “presumed human remains” were found. Experts had thought that it would be unlikely to recover any bodies due to violence the tragedy would have involved.
