Enhanced Box Score: Phillies 3, Cubs 1 - June 29, 2023
There were good things tonight – another solid Kyle Hendricks start, another Jared Young extra-base hit and RBI, a run-saving Ian Happ catch – but they were few and far between, and surrounded on all sides by things that upset you.
Not once but TWICE tonight the Cubs inexplicably* bunted with runners in scoring position. In back-to-back innings! First, Nick Madrigal with two outs and runners on the corners, and then later Christopher Morel with no outs and runners on the corners. Each on their own made your eyes bulge in bewilderment and rage, but their combined impact was to completely break my brain. It was nonsense. Just total nonsense. I can’t FATHOM that either was called from the bench, but I also can’t understand why either guy would even try it in those spots.
*(I shouldn’t say “inexplicable,” because there assuredly is an explanation – trying to catch the Phillies off-guard and bunt for a hit – but they were still terrible decisions. The guys ahead of you were reaching base by just doing normal things. DO THAT.)
Suffice to say, no further offense came after that, and the Cubs were swept by the Phillies. Things have taken a dark turn.
