Elon Musk’s mother wants to cancel proposed fight with Mark Zuckerberg
Elon Musk’s mother wants to put a stop to his proposed cage match fight with Bay Area tech rival Mark Zuckerberg.
Maye Musk, the mother of the Tesla CEO, has posted a series of messages disapproving of the mixed martial arts bout between two of the world’s wealthiest men, urging her son’s followers to stop encouraging the match.
In response to a tweet showcasing Musk’s training session with podcaster Lex Fridman on his 52nd birthday Wednesday, Maye Musk tweeted, “Sorry, I can’t click a like on this.”
Last week, she claimed to have canceled the fight between Musk, who acquired Twitter for $44 billion last year, and Zuckerberg, 39, the CEO of Meta Platforms.
“I haven’t told them yet. But I will continue to say the fight is canceled, just in case,” she tweeted.
The idea for a cage match fight between the two moguls erupted on social media following a report that Facebook, owned by Meta, is developing a competing service to Twitter called Threads.
Elon’s father, Errol Musk, has also voiced concerns over the potential consequences for his son in the proposed but unconfirmed match goes ahead.
Speaking from his home in South Africa, Errol Musk referred to the clash as a “no-win situation” for Elon.
The elder Musk, 77, explained to the Sun. “The thing is, if this crazy fight goes ahead, if Elon beats this guy, Elon will be called a bully, being so much heavier and taller, while if he loses the humiliation would be total.”
Maye Musk, 75, suggested an alternative approach where the two men engage in a more civil setting.
“A verbal fight only,” she said. “Three questions each. The funniest answers win. Who agrees?”
Despite the concerns raised by Elon’s parents, plans to hold the fight at the Vegas Octagon are moving forward. Dana White, president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, confirmed that he has had conversations with both billionaires and emphasized both were “dead serious” about the high-stakes showdown.
Musk has even accepted an invitation to train with UFC champion and former mixed martial arts fighter George St-Pierre.
The images shared by Fridman on Wednesday showed him and Musk on the mat.
“I’m extremely impressed with his strength, power, and skill, on the feet and on the ground,” wrote Fridman, who has a black belt in jiu-jitsu. “It was epic.”
A spokesperson for Meta said in a statement that talk of the match “speaks for itself.”
Zuckerberg, who boasts extensive training in mixed martial arts, recently participated in his first Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournament in Woodside. He secured victory over an Uber engineer and earned two medals.
Errol Musk said that his family is “quite worried” about the fight despite noting that Elon has a purple belt in karate. “He does not know how to go for the kill,” the tech titan’s father said. “He cares too much.”
Oddsmakers favor Zuckerberg in the potential cage match.
White anticipates that offering the fight on pay-per-view could generate more than $1 billion in revenue, potentially breaking records.
But Fridman said he would prefer to see the men engage in a mixed martial arts battle rather than a cage match. “That said, as Elon says, the most entertaining outcome is the most likely,” he added. “I’m there for them, no matter what.”
