Daigo Umehara: Ryu doesn't have enough to compete in SF6... even when you add up everything he has, he's not there yet
It's been about a month since Street Fighter 6 was released. As such, numerous players have already released early impressions tier lists that ranks all 18 characters in the game.
Unfortunately for Shoto fans, Ryu has generally been perceived as being a mid to low tier contender in Street Fighter 6. Evidently, characters like Ken and Luke appear to be better options for those that intend to compete.
Even BST|Daigo Umehara is seemingly putting practice time into Ken. In a recent stream (translated by FGC Translated Alpha), Daigo outlined exactly what Ryu's problems are in Street Fighter 6.
"Even now, Ryu isn't weak," declared Daigo. "But other characters are so overpowered. I recognize that's how it is now."
Needless to say, this is very similar to how Ryu was typically viewed in Street Fighter 5. Effectively, it was often echoed that Ryu was an "honest character," but he existed in a broken world. Of course, it also didn't help that most of the roster had relatively simple ways of dealing with fireballs.
"Many characters have good weapons. I totally see that, and that's completely fine," continued Daigo. "But Ryu doesn't have enough to compete. Even when you add up everything [that] he has, he's not there yet."
It would seem that Daigo intends to stick with Ken for the time being. "I am very satisfied with Ken and he is in Street Fighter 6," noted Daigo. "So I'm fine, but Ryu is gone again."
During the video, Daigo would also go on to talk about how important Okizeme is in Street Fighter 6 and why it's such a problem for Ryu. Specifically, he notes that Ryu's best tool might be his Denjin Charge, but he has to give up Okizeme to use it.
