The South Bend Cubs Just Threw a No-Hitter!
I love minor league no-hitters. Well, from Chicago Cubs prospects, I mean. There’s something about the fact that they’re always combined – so you get to celebrate a number of guys at once – but it’s *OK* that they’re merely combined, because no one expects a prospect to go nine innings.
The Cubs have had several of them the last few years, and I’m excited to say that South Bend has add another to the tally tonight:
🚨 It's a no-hitter in South Bend! 🚨@Cubs prospects Michael Arias, Jarod Wright, Eduarniel Nunez and Frankie Scalzo Jr. combine on the @SBCubs' first such feat since Aug. 12, 2021: pic.twitter.com/sy27sdj3tX — Minor League Baseball (@MiLB) July 7, 2023
The group of pitchers going for South Bend tonight:
Breakout 21-year-old righty Michael Arias, making just his second start at High-A, threw the first three hitless innings. He was on the wilder side with four walks, but he also struck out five, because he’s got nasty stuff.
Jarod Wright, 26, got the next four innings (1 BB, 2K). Wright was signed out of independent ball in 2021, which is why he’s a little older for the level.
Hard-throwing reliever Eduarniel Nunez, 24, threw a clean inning with two strikeouts.
And 23-year-old reliever Frankie Scalzo, Jr. finished off the 9th, continuing his strong 2023 campaign.
