ASUS's ROG STRIX Variant of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB GPU Costs Over $600 US, More Expensive Than 4070
NVIDIA will soon be launching its GeForce RTX 4060 Ti graphics card in 16 GB flavors, starting at a price point of $499 US.
ASUS Makes NVIDIA's Overpriced 16 GB GeForce RTX 4060 Ti GPU Even More Expensive With ROG STRIX Variant
NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB GPU may not be the performance per dollar champ when it launches and that's due to a $499 US price which is a $100 US hike over the 8 GB model. To make things even worse, ASUS will be launching its GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB graphics card in the ROG STRIX variant which will cost a further $100 US premium over the MSRP.
ASUS has just revealed that they will have a ROG STRIX OC variant of the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB GPU. The 8 GB model of the same card comes at a $90 US premium over the reference MSRP which is set at $399 US. The 8 GB ROG STRIX almost matches the MSRP of the RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB but wait till you hear what ASUS is going to charge for its RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB ROG STRIX variant. As reported by ITHome, the company will charge 4699 RMB which equals $650 US.
The reference MSRP for the graphics card within China is set at 3999 RMB or $550 US but the 800 RMB markup for the ROG STRIX means that it will essentially cost more than the RTX 4070 which makes it a really bad deal. That's a 17.5% increase in price and if the same premium is charged in the US, that would lead to a $580-$600 US pricing for US residents. And it's not like the card offers a huge performance increase with the ROG STRIX OC variant.
In TechpowerUP's review of the ROG STRIX RTX 4060 Ti 8 GB, the card only offered 4-5% better performance and the massive 2.5-slot and triple-fan cooler only yielded 3.5C lower temps than the competing dual-fan cards. The 4060 Ti doesn't require such huge coolers & even the Dual OC variant from ASUS themselves was running at sub 55C temps. You better just buy the most basic MSRP model and you'll get virtually the same performance and even a more compact design to work with. I believe that triple-slot coolers are useless for a GPU of this tier.
Also, it looks like AIBs aren't showing a lot of excitement around the 16 GB variant either. Andreas Schilling of Hardwareluxx talked to a few vendors and it looks like most manufacturers will not be promoting the card and will have only a few models available at launch compared to the RTX 4060 Ti 8 GB series. We have also had similar conversations with AIBs and from what we have learned, most AIBs aren't even going to sample the card since they already know that consumers are not going to line up for this model and there isn't going to be anything good to talk about.
The GeForce RTX 4060 Ti with 16 GB of graphics memory should only have one purpose: To quiet those critics who find that 8 GB are not enough (I'll tell you a little secret: that's right!). But the better equipped model is not very attractive in terms of price and positioning. — Andreas Schilling 🇺🇦 (@aschilling) July 6, 2023
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti is going to hit shelves on the 18th of July with a starting MSRP of $499 US. It will only come in custom models. In official NVIDIA benchmarks, the company itself showcased tiny single-digit gains for the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB graphics card, and the card is meant for 1080p gaming. So if you plan on gaming at 1440p, you'll essentially have to utilize DLSS while the higher VRAM buffer would only offer small gains, mostly in the minimum frame rate.

A useful case for the 16 GB RTX 4060 Ti can be Stable Diffusion and AI performance. Since LLMs and DNNs requires a large frame buffer, this card can be seen as a valuable addition for those who are invested in such workloads. The RTX 4000 SFF Ada cost over $1000 US so getting the 4060 Ti at half the price with 16 GB VRAM can be great for such users as you are getting some insane AI capabilities thanks to the Ada architecture but besides that, a 16 GB card with the 128-bit bus isn't going to offer a huge improvement.
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 8 GB already failed to en masse a large audience of buyers so we doubt that an overpriced variant that charges $100 US more for twice the memory buffer would turn out to be a big success for team green.
