2 Newborn Girls Found Dead In Bathroom Of Streeterville Daycare After Staff Member's 'Unanticipated Delivery'
STREETERVILLE — Two newborn girls were found dead at a daycare facility on the Northwestern Memorial Hospital campus Thursday evening, according to police.
Officers responded to a call shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday after someone found two female newborns unresponsive in a bathroom at the childcare center on the 400 block of East Ontario Street, police said.
The babies were found inside a black garbage bag as janitorial staff were cleaning the bathroom, according to the Sun-Times.
Both newborns were taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital, where they were pronounced dead, according to police.
The Bernice E. Lavin Early Childhood Education Center, where the babies were found, issued a statement describing the “tragic situation … when a staff member experienced a medical emergency that resulted in the unanticipated delivery of newborn twin babies.”
That person is an employee of Bright Horizons, which provides childcare services for Northwestern University employees, according to a hospital spokesperson. Bright Horizons has 11 other daycare locations in Chicago.
“We will be providing emotional and mental health support to all members of our center team and families. We ask for support and respect for everyone involved at this time as we grieve together and work to support each other and any ensuing investigation,” according to the statement from the center.
Northwestern Memorial Hospital also issued a statement, also saying it was an “emergency medical situation involving a daycare employee.”
“No daycare children were involved or impacted by the situation,” the statement said.
Area Three detectives are conducting a death investigation.
