Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 3, Yankees 0 - July 7, 2023
WOO HOO! The Cubs take the first game in New York, and that feels mighty good. Especially the way it happened.
I can’t say I saw that Jameson Taillon start coming. Although he obviously has plenty of experience pitching in Yankee Stadium, it seemed a particularly bad fit for his struggles this year. And, well, it just wouldn’t have been smart to bet on him having a good start anyway.
But boy did he. Taillon went a whopping eight innings tonight, scoreless, allowing just one hit, and barely broke a sweat. It was one of the best starts of the year by ANY Cubs starting pitcher, let alone by Taillon.
Cody Bellinger extended his hitting streak to a career-best 13 games by homering for the second straight day. I knew that power was coming back. It was part of an overall great game for Bellinger, who is a key component of the Cubs getting to where they need to be ASAP.
Hey, Patrick Wisdom actually came through with a clutch hit (though he then got himself TOOTBLAN’d off the bases). I’m sure it felt good, and I will claim credit for having written today about his deep slump.
I love having Adbert Alzolay available as the closer now. It just feels right.
