Apple introduced the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with a major redesign. The devices feature a miniLED display that offers an enhanced viewing experience compared to the LCD. However, the company will not stick to the miniLED display for long as it aims to offer OLED MacBook Pro models in the future. It was previously rumored that the company is working on OLED MacBook Pro models which were slated to launch in 2026. A new report suggests that the company has pushed the launch by a year.

Apple to launch OLED MacBook Pro models in 2027, microLED will take its time

We have recently covered that Apple's OLED iPad Pro models with M3 chips are on track to launch next year. However, the company has pushed the launch dates by a year. It was initially reported that the company will launch the OLED MacBook Pro models sometime in 2026. According to The Elec, the device is rumored to launch in 2027.

The company currently offers MacBook models in two display variants, the miniLED version and the LCD version. Take note that only the 14-inch and 16-inch version of the MacBook Pro houses a miniLED panel. While the miniLED is an upgrade over LCD, it is still inferior to the OLED panels for a lot of reasons. For instance, OLED panels consume less power which could improve the machine's battery life. Additionally, OLED displays provide better color accuracy with deeper blacks as only the individual active pixels light up.

Apple's new 13.6-inch and 15.3-inch MacBook Air models also feature an LCD alongside the 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro. The company will eventually move away from LCD or miniLED to the OLED bandwagon but it will not stick to it for long. This is because the company has been working on its custom microLED displays. The first Apple product to come with a microLED product will be the Apple Watch Ultra which is slated to launch in 2027. Soon after the company will introduce the display technology on the iPhone, iPad, and MacBooks.

microLED displays feature the brightness levels of a miniLED display but with enhanced color accuracy and deeper blacks. Since we are waiting for the OLED MacBook Pro models as of now, the microLED option could be announced years after. The reason for the delay is not mentioned by the source. Take note that the company could launch the OLED MacBook Pro early as the final word rests with the company.
