A popular nightspot in Pittsburgh’s South Side neighborhood has temporarily closed after recent gun violence.
Carson City Saloon announced Monday on Facebook that it will shut its doors for a while “for the safety of our staff and patrons alike.”
It is the first such closure in the sports bar’s 17-year history.
“After Saturday’s three shootings and the careless activity that continues to go unchecked on Carson Street, we have decided it’s best to shutter our doors until some action is taken by city leaders to support our desire to return the (South Side) to a safe and prosperous neighborhood and nightlife district,” the post read.
The saloon may reopen mid-August to kick off football season, according to the post.
A man was fatally shot early Sunday morning in the South Side, according to Pittsburgh police.
The man, who was in his 30s but not identified, was found about 1 a.m. at the intersection of South 13th and East Carson streets with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. Police used tourniquets to stem the bleeding until medics arrived. He later died at a hospital.
A man was also shot several times in a drive-by shooting in the South Side along the 1500 block of East Carson Street around 2:15 a.m. April 29.
Those incidents are under investigation.
A year ago, Mayor Ed Gainey walked the South Side streets on a weekend night and held community meetings with residents to search for solutions to violence in the business district.
“I know violence destroys profit,” Gainey said at the time. “And I know public safety makes money.”
Gainey and the city’s public safety officials said last year they were taking added precautions to ensure safety in the entertainment district as local business owners called on city officials to do their part in stopping the escalating violence.
