4Warn Weather – You’ll need both the sunglasses and umbrella today. We start off warm with sunshine, but clouds will increase ahead of an approaching cold front.

Plan for a hot and steamy day as highs rise into the upper 80s. That will help fuel some afternoon showers and storms as the heat and humidity clashes with the cold front.

You should be able to grab lunch on a patio today before isolated strong-to-severe thunderstorms develop later this afternoon and evening -- which could impact outdoor sporting activities for kids.

The potential for thunderstorm development looks to be just after 2 p.m. for those north of M-59. Then, the storms will pass through the heart of Metro Detroit closer to 4 p.m. or 5 p.m., as the front slowly sags southward.

Main threats during the storms will be wind gusts up to 60 mph and large hail. Most of this weather should push out of our area by 9 p.m.

Tonight’s sunset is at 9:10 p.m.

More storm chances Wednesday

Another round of thunderstorms are possible Wednesday, with a marginal risk for possible isolated severe thunderstorms in and south of Pontiac. The main threats Wednesday will be damaging winds and heavy, possibly excessive, rainfall. More than an inch of rainfall is likely.

The widespread heavy rain will lead to flooding concerns Wednesday throughout most of Metro Detroit. Those with homes prone to flooding should take care to prepare.

Rain chances Thursday, Friday

Rain chances will continue every day through the rest of the week, though I think rain will be spottier on Thursday.

Friday could see a few more showers, but the chance remains small.

Elsewhere ...

Nationally, torrential rains across the Northeast will be slow to subside and dissipate this week, and significant flooding remains possible.

Severe storms are possible the next few days from parts of the Plains into the Midwest. Dangerous heat across the South will gradually build and expand this week.
