Hazardous material spill in San Mateo
A hazardous material spill in San Mateo Thursday has shut down eastbound Highway 92 near Highway 101 and prompted officials to issue a shelter-in-place advisory.
Eastbound lanes of the highway are closed from South Delaware Street to Highway 101 due to the sodium bisulphate spill, officials said. It's unknown when lanes will reopen. Westbound lanes remain open.
The city said, as a precautionary measure, people within a quarter-mile of the Highway 92-Highway 101 interchange should stay inside and keep their windows closed.
The shelter-in-place advisory was lifted around 3 p.m.

Officials on Thursday were investigating a reported hazardous material spill in the area of Highway 92 and Highway 101 in San Mateo.
"The CDC reports [sodium bisulphate] causes irritation to eyes, skin, and mucous membranes if inhaled, ingested, or comes in contact with eyes or skin," police said. "The CDC recommends irrigating your eyes immediately if you have direct contact with it, breathing in fresh air, and seeking medical attention if the liquid is swallowed."
Police added: "If you drove through the spill, on Highway 92, the material is a very low risk. It is slightly corrosive, and it should be washed off your car with lots of water."
No injuries were reported.
