Christopher Nolan Addresses the Possibility of Directing Another Superhero Movie
After the release of Oppenheimer, what comes next for Christopher Nolan isn't yet clear, but fans hoping that he may return to the superhero genre might be left disappointed.
In a new interview with HugoDécrypte on YouTube, Nolan responded to a series of rapid fire questions seeking quick yes-or-no answers. Nolan was asked if he'd ever want to direct another superhero movie after The Dark Knight Trilogy, a fair question given the praise given to his films and the continued prevalence of comic book adaptations. However, without hesitation, Nolan bluntly responded, "No." As he quickly moved on to the next question, no further clarification was provided, though with that blunt response, Nolan is still making it pretty clear that he's moved on from superhero movies.

That might also seal the deal that Christian Bale, the Bruce Wayne of The Dark Knight Trilogy, will never return as Batman. While there were multiple incarnations of Batman recently featured in The Flash, Bale's version from Nolan's movie trilogy was not among them. Bale previously explained how he would never consider reprising the role of Batman unless it was Nolan directing. If Nolan is done with superhero movies, that would seemingly eliminate the possibility of Bale's Batman popping up through the DCU's multiverse anytime soon.
"For me, that would be a matter of Chris Nolan, if he ever decided to do it again and if he chose to come my way again, then yeah, I would consider it because that was always our pact between each other is we would just stick to it," Bale told ComicBook.com last year when asked about what it would take to bring his Batman back. "We said we would only ever make three. And then I said to myself, and I'd only ever make it with Chris."

Meanwhile, Nolan's focus has been on bringing to life the story of nuclear weapon designer J. Robert Oppenheimer with the biopic Oppenheimer. Cillian Murphy stars as Oppenheimer in the film, which was written and directed by Nolan. It features a strong ensemble cast that also includes Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Casey Affleck, Josh Hartnett, and Kenneth Branagh. The film is notably the first R-rated movie to be released by Nolan in over two decades.
Oppenheimer is set to premiere in movie theaters on July 21, 2023, alongside Greta Gerwig's Barbie.
