How Street Fighter 6's incoming pre-EVO Drive Rush change might alter gameplay

The Street Fighter 6 saw big news break Tuesday morning as Capcom announced via Twitter that they'll be making an important change to the way Drive Rush is performed.

This change is slated to be implemented on July 24, the same day Rashid drops, and thus we be implemented just under two weeks before EVO 2023, which kicks off on August 4. In our latest episode of Talk and Block we discuss what this change will effect, what it likely won't effect, and more.

Steven "DreamKing" Chavez joins to discuss what exactly is going on with the change, noting that this will only affect Drive Rush cancels (DRC) and notably will not have much to do with the mechanic when it's performed from the neutral state.

The specific alteration is to the command required to perform a Drive Rush cancel out of a normal attack. Traditionally players have needed to press forward twice during the cancel window of a valid normal to get a DRC, but this update will make it so that simply pressing medium punch and medium kick during a move's cancel window (instead of the double forward inputs) will get a DRC.

Many players quickly began theorizing about the further implications of this update, noting that the impact on charge characters could be substantial. In the Capcom Japan tweet detailing the news, it's confirmed that the control stick must be in either the neutral or forward position for the DRC to work.

This means that charge characters like Guile or E. Honda won't be able to suddenly maintain charge while doing a DRC, but it does mean that players using such fighters will be able to return the control stick to a charging position a little faster as they no longer must input a double forward.

While this does look to ergonomically save many players' wrists from the somewhat taxing repetitive dash inputs that naturally come with any round of SF6, we do have to wonder if such a drastic change might have unintended effects. With this coming out so close to EVO, the consequences could be quite dire.
